ARNOBE THE AFRICAN. Commentarii, pii juxta ac eruditi in omnes Psalmos. Eight books of his disputations against the Gentiles. Basel, Hieronymus Froben & Nikolaus Episcopius, 1560. In-8, fawn calfskin, gilt fillet, an oval azure medallion in the centre, encircled by a supralibris in gilt letters, spine decorated with a small repeated fleur-de-lis, smooth edges (contemporary binding). A collected edition bringing together the Commentaries on the Psalms by Arnobius the Younger, reprinted from the edition published by Erasmus in 1522, and the apologetic treatise Against the Gentiles by Arnobius the Elder, known as ‘the African’, a rhetorician of Berber origin who converted to Christianity, published by Sigmund Gelen from 1546 onwards. The volume, elegantly printed in italics, is marked with Froben’s mark on the title page and the final leaf. A copy bound in its day in the name of Bartholomeus Urdessius (?).
