AUGUSTINE (Saint). Opuscula. Venice, Andrea Bonetti, 23 July 1484. In-4 (209 x 153 mm) comprising [288] folios, fawn calfskin, triple gilt rules, decorated spine, red edges (18th-century binding). Third collected edition, and the second dated edition, of the opuscule of Saint Augustine, following the first edition printed in Kraków around 1475 and that of Ottaviano Scoto, published in Venice in May 1483. This edition was based on the previous one, but expanded to include an apocryphal treatise, *De anima et spiritu*, and three texts on the life of Augustine. A precious Venetian incunabulum printed in two columns in Gothic type. It brings together a significant part of Augustine’s corpus, beginning with *The Confessions*, his most famous and important work, of which this is the sixth printing, following the first edition published in Strasbourg around 1470 by Mentelin, and those from Milan (1475), Cologne (1482), Venice (1483) and Deventer (1483). The volume also includes numerous short works by Augustine of Hippo, such as the *Enchiridion de fide, spe et caritate*, the treatises *De vita beata*, *De divinatione dæmonum*, *De cura pro mortuis gerenda*, *De doctrina christiana*, *De vera religione*, etc., and other works attributed to him: *Meditationes*, *Soliloquia*, *Manuale*, *De triplici habitaculo*, etc. A copy decorated with large initials and rubricated in red, complete with the first blank leaf and in a fine state of preservation. Some copies bear the printer’s mark in the colophon; others, such as this one, do not. Endpapers replaced, repair in the margin of the last leaf, a few minor stains and foxing of no consequence, small tears at the upper edges, one corner worn.
