BONIFACE VIII. Sextus decretalium. [Strasbourg, Hans Grüninger], 14 February 1491. – CLEMENT V (Pope). Constitutiones clementinarum. [Strasbourg, Hans Grüninger], 19 March 1491. Two works in one folio volume (408 x 279 mm) comprising [98] folios. (f.s. a8 b-c6 d8 e6 f8 g-h6 i8 k-l6 m-o8) and [53] (out of 54) folios. (marked A8 B–E6 F–G8 H6); brown leather, cold-stamped on wooden boards (contemporary binding). A combination of two rare Strasbourg incunabula, comprising two of the fundamental treatises on canon law: the Sexte or Sixth Book of the Decretals, promulgated in 1298 by Pope Boniface VIII, and the so-called Clementine and Extravagant Decretals promulgated by Clement V and his successors, with the gloss by the canonist Giovanni d’Andrea (c. 1270–1348) framing the text, and his short treatise *Super arboribus consanguinitatis et affinitati*. A splendid Gothic print in red and black, in two columns, with the gloss framing the text. The Sexto features the passage printed in red on ff. 45–46. These two works were printed by Johannes Reinhard, known as Hans Grüninger (c. 1455–c. 1532), one of the leading figures in the early Strasbourg typographic tradition. A fine copy, fully rubricated and decorated with initials painted in red and blue, in a beautiful contemporary embossed binding. It bears several handwritten bookplates from the 16th and 17th centuries, all from Bavaria: Heinrich Sedelhammer in 1553, originally from Manching, then a student at the University of Ingolstadt; Johannes Pfrontner, from Füssen, a student at the same university (bookplate partially erased); Georg Hennschberger in 1623; Cuno Hernndl in 1630; and from the library of the Franciscan monastery in Dingolfing (founded in 1642). A repaired tear, with no loss of text, on folio a1 of the first volume; two small marginal tears repaired in the second, bound without the final blank leaf H6; a few wormholes and scattered marginal stains, none serious.
