Description
BOUT (Henri de). *Tractatus de synodo episcopi, et de statutis episcopi synodalibus*. Lyon, Jean David, known as La Mouche [for Vincent de Portonariis], 1529. In-8, [20] pp., 92 folios, red morocco, spine decorated with gilt fleurs-de-lis, interior lace, gilt head, (B. Magnin). The only edition of this ‘book of the utmost rarity’ (Breghot du Lut), printed in Gothic type by Jean David, known as La Mouche, a printer in Lyon between 1527 and 1531, who was also a type founder, bookbinder and bookseller. The title, in red and black, is adorned with a beautiful frame of colonnades engraved on wood and bears the mark of Vincent de Portonariis, a bookseller from Lyon originally from Trino, in the Duchy of Montferrat, who ran his own business from 1506 until his death in 1547. The Bresse jurist Henri de Bout (or Debout, de Bottis in Latin), born in Beynost at the end of the 15th century and who died in 1544, was an official of Bresse and Dombes. He composed this treatise on the episcopal synod under the auspices of Louis de Gorrevod, Bishop of Bourg from 1515 to 1534. On the reverse of the second leaf is a letter from the author to Benoît Favre, lieutenant-general of the bailiwick of Bresse, and Favre’s reply, both dated 1528 in Bourg-en-Bresse. A copy very well bound by Magnin for the collector Joseph Nouvellet (1841–1904), who had assembled in Saint-André-de-Corcy, in the Ain, a substantial library on the history of Lyon, the Lyonnais region, Bresse, Bugey and the Dombes. The copy has been carefully cleaned and glued by Mrs Vigna. From the Joseph Nouvellet library (1891, no. 56), bearing an ex-libris stamp and an interesting handwritten bibliographical note of 6 pp. inserted at the beginning of the volume.
