BREVIARY FOR THE USE OF ROME, with a calendar adapted for use in Rodez. [Southern France: Rodez, second half of the 15th century]. Fragment of a manuscript on parchment. In-8 (125 x 95 mm) comprising [2] ruled blank leaves, [43] leaves. (ff. 12 to 85v, 108 to 181v missing), [2] blank ruled leaves, [12] leaves (calendar), [2] blank ruled leaves, mixed script in two columns of 28 lines (text area 89 x 63 mm), calendar with 32 long lines (text area 100 x 60 mm), ff. 84v, 96v colophons; red velvet with flap and leather fastening (modern binding). This breviary follows the Roman rite, as indicated by its incipit, but the calendar points to the south of France and, more specifically, the diocese of Rodez. It was probably compiled for the Augustinians in the second half of the 15th century. In 1559, this breviary belonged to Brother Paul Salbin of the Augustinians in Toulouse: inscription on f. 2v: ‘Frater Salbius Pauletus, fecit 1559 Augustinus Tholose’. It subsequently passed into the library of the College of the Society of Jesus in Toulouse, as indicated by the inscription on ff. 3v, 4, 4v: ‘Collegii Tolosanum Societatis Jesu Catalogus inscriptio’. Indeed, towards the end of the 17th century, the Jesuits took possession of former premises that had belonged to the Augustinian friars of Toulouse. The college was founded in 1562 and moved into the Augustinian convent from that time onwards. Abbé V. Leroquais lists 10 Roman breviaries with a calendar adapted for use in Rodez, preserved in France (Abbé V. Leroquais, *Les Bréviaires manuscrits des bibliothèques publiques de France*, Paris, 1932–1934, vol. 3, pp. 86, 89, 124, 159, 160, 243). Some of these breviaries followed a similar path to the present breviary: the Toulouse breviary Bm. Ms. 78 belonged to the Dominicans of Rodez and later of Toulouse, whilst the Toulouse breviary Bm. Ms. 75, written in 1457 for use in Rodez with additions relating to the relics preserved at Saint-Sernin in Toulouse in the 16th century, is now held in the Toulouse Municipal Library, the 14th-century Roman Breviary with the Rodez calendar was held in the Library of the Augustinians of Toulouse (ex-libris, Toulouse Bm Ms. 71). The Breviary for use in Toulouse (Bm. Ms. 74) bears an ex-libris of the Augustinians of Toulouse. In the 16th century, the relics preserved at Saint-Sernin in Toulouse were added to it. Book-making activity in Rodez is documented by three books of hours in a provincial style: Glasgow, Mitchell Library Ms. 308857 (late 14th or first half of the 15th century), Paris BnF. ms. Nal. 3196 from the first half of the 15th century, and Rodez Médiathèque Ms. 138, a recent acquisition datable to around 1470. The borders of this last book of hours appear to be contemporary with the single border in our breviary. It also features the type of vignetted initial (J. Moulin, ‘A Book of Hours for use in Rodez’ and other contributions in the exhibition catalogue *The Book in the Middle Ages*, Rodez Médiathèque, 30 January–30 April 2003, available online). The authors note that the style of the ornamental letters is similar to those painted in a Basel incunabulum dated 1489: Jean Gerson, *Opera* (Rodez Médiathèque, Res. M 99).
