Description
BUONINSEGNI (Piero). *Historia fiorentina*. Florence, Giorgio Marescotti, 1581 [1579 in the colophon]. Small quarto, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with a repeated crowned cipher, roulette on the edges, marbled edges (17th-century binding). First edition, second printing, dated 1581 on the title page but 1579 in the colophon (variant B); the first printing is dated 1580. This important history of Florence, from the Flood to 1410, was composed a century earlier by Domenico Buoninsegni (1384–1465), a Florentine patrician and merchant. The manuscript was supplied by Giovan Maria da Urbino, as the printer Giorgio Marescotti explains in his dedicatory epistle to Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici. A very fine copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms and cipher of Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619–1683), with the handwritten ex-libris of the Bibliotheca Colbertina (1728, II, no. 7833) on the title page. Louis XIV’s minister had, with the assistance of Pierre de Carcavi, built up a scholarly library renowned throughout Europe. On his death, it passed into the hands of his eldest son Jean-Baptiste, Marquis de Seignelay, then to his younger son Jacques-Nicolas, Archbishop of Rouen, and finally to his grandson Charles-Éléonor, before being dispersed at public auction, between 1728 and 1732, in no fewer than 111 sessions. Early repair with a gap in the text on pp. 13–14; a stamped mark has been scraped off the title page. Moreni, I, 191.
