Description
CARACCIOLO (Roberto). *Sermones de laudibus sanctorum*. Augsburg, Erhard Ratdolt, 27 October 1489. In-4, [301] (of 314) folios, sow’s hide stamped onto wooden boards, triple framing of scrollwork and embossed portraits, date stamped in black on the upper cover, spine with three raised bands, title in ink, blue edges, metal clasps (Germanic binding dated 1596). First edition printed in Germany of this collection of sermons by the Franciscan preacher Roberto Caracciolo of Lecce (c. 1425–1495), who was Bishop of Aquino and Lecce. It appeared just a few months after the first two Italian editions, printed in the same year in Naples and Venice. This rare Bavarian incunabulum is printed in Gothic type in two columns and adorned with wood-engraved initials and a small woodcut depicting Jerusalem (f. e6v°). A copy entirely rubricated, with a pretty initial painted in red (f. r3v°), in an antique binding of stamped sow’s hide. From the libraries of Johannes Lang, a German parish priest, with a handwritten bookplate dated 1634 on the title page; and Arthur de La Borderie (1827–1901), historian of the Breton nation and Member of Parliament for Ille-et-Vilaine, with a handwritten bookplate dated 1880 on a flyleaf. An incomplete copy, missing folio O6 and the index (Registrum, [12] ff. sign. <2–6>12), which is not present in all copies. Binding slightly worn and stained, one clasp missing, occasional foxing and small marginal stains.
