CAESAR (Julius). Commentarii translated into the vernacular by Agostino Ortica della Porta. Venice, Iacopo Penzio da Lecho, 4 February 1517. In-8, brown morocco with blind-stamped decoration, wide decorative rule set with quadruple fillets, central rectangle adorned with blind-stamped tassels and fleurons and a central blind-stamped medallion, spine with two raised bands decorated with oblique fillets and fleurons, smooth edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the Italian translation by the Genoese humanist Agostino Ortica della Porta of Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War and the Civil War. The printer Iacopo Pencio, originally from Lecco in Lombardy, was active in Venice from 1495 to 1527. The volume is decorated with four woodcuts depicting Roman war machines. An elegant example of Venetian binding in cold-stamped morocco leather. Handwritten bookplate at the top of the title page: Di Bernardo di Filippo Giugni. Handwritten note in Italian on the inside front cover: Libro molto raro... From the library of Count Paul de Berthou (1859–1933), archivist, palaeographer and historian specialising in Brittany, with a handwritten bookplate A section is missing at the top of the title page, which has been previously restored, but this does not affect the text.
