Description
FERNAND (Jean). *Hore dive Crucis*, published by Johann Fernand, royal musician. Paris, Félix Baligault, undated [c. 1500]. Small quarto, [8] folios (marked A8); ivory half-vellum Bradel binding with corners, plain, unmarked spine (modern binding). An exceedingly rare Gothic edition of the *Hores de la Croix* composed by Jean Fernand. Several editions published by Félix Baligault exist, of which very few copies of each are known to survive. Born in Bruges around 1460, Jean Fernand was, like his elder brother Charles, a musician to the king at the Royal Chapel of France before joining the Benedictines at Saint-Pierre Abbey in Chezal-Benoît. Printed in Gothic type, 31 lines per page. The final leaf is adorned with Félix Baligault’s mark featuring two monkeys, accompanied by his motto within a frame of four engraved woodcuts. From the Marcel Desjardin Library (2013, no. 33), with bookplate. Unmarked copy, with initials in white. Repairs to the lower corners of the leaves.
