Description
[HOURS]. The Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary according to the Roman rite, with numerous prayers in both French and Latin. [Paris, Thielmann Kerver for Gillet Remacle, 1 December 1502] (almanac for 1497–1520). Large 8vo in vellum, [94] (of 96) folios. (sign. A-L8 M6); stiff vellum cover with flaps, plain, unmarked spine, modern slipcase (original binding). A precious Parisian book of hours printed by Thielmann Kerver on behalf of Gilles Remacle. Abundant engraved illustrations including Thielmann Kerver’s mark on the title page, the figure of the Anatomical Man on the verso, and 18 full-page copperplate engravings based on the compositions of the Master of Anne of Brittany, referred to by Ina Nettekoven as the Master of the Rose in the Apocalypse of the Sainte-Chapelle, and sometimes identified as Jean d’Ypres. These depict the martyrdom of Saint John, the betrayal of Judas, the Tree of Jesse, the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Announcement to the Shepherds, the Adoration of the Magi, the Presentation in the Temple, the Flight into Egypt, the Coronation of the Virgin, Bathsheba at her Bath, Death Overcoming Life, the Crucifixion, Pentecost, the Trinity and the Evangelists, the Assumption of the Virgin and the Passion of Christ. Furthermore, each page is framed by a border of wood-engraved historical vignettes. This copy is printed on vellum, ruled, rubricated and embellished with initial letters painted in blue, red and gold. Of the full-page engravings, six have been partially enhanced with colour. This copy has narrow margins, with damage to the signatures, and is set in an early vellum binding. It is incomplete, lacking the final two folios (M7–8), which notably contain the colophon.
