Description
[HOURS]. The Hours of the Immaculate Virgin, according to the usage of the Roman Church. [Paris, Guillaume Le Rouge, c. 1510]. In-8 (92 x 158 mm) on vellum, [107] folios (out of 112, sign. a-h8 A-F8 G4); brown calfskin, double gilt rule, gilt Arma Christi in the centre, decorated spine, gilt edges (original binding). A very rare Parisian book of hours in the Roman usage, printed in italics, in red and black. The woodcut illustrations include a disc for the Sunday letter, 11 scenes depicting the months of the year (out of 12), with the zodiac in the calendar, 4 figures of the Evangelists, the Arrest of Christ, all in half-page format; 11 scenes from the life of the Virgin, a second depiction of the Annunciation, Christ blessing King David, a damned soul, and a saint praying for the souls in Purgatory, all taking up two-thirds of a page, and 24 half-page figures of saints. A copy printed on vellum, set in red ink, with all the engravings and initial letters formerly enhanced with gouache. In addition to this copy, which he describes, Henri Monceaux listed four others in 1896: one at the BnF (Vélins-2847), one at Chantilly and two that appeared on the market in the Firmin-Didot [incomplete] and Maglione sales; to which must be added two further, incomplete copies, one held at the Newberry Library and the other having appeared on the market in 2007. From the library of Stanislas Gaillard of Saint-Germain (1816–1852), archaeologist, musician and historian of liturgical music, with a wet stamp and signature on the title page. An incomplete copy comprising 5 folios (B1, D6, F1, F7–8); folio a3 has been cut halfway down the page (resulting in the absence of the woodcut for the month of February); old repairs to the corners of the title leaf and the leaves of the first three quires; the title page is soiled, with the fleur-de-lis of the printer’s mark covered in brown ink; a marginal stain on the second leaf; a tear without loss on ff. a4–6. The paintings are rather roughly executed and, in places, slightly rubbed. The upper jaw is split; the covers are rubbed; the caps and lower jaw have been restored.
