Description
[HOURS]. These hours, for use in Paris from beginning to end without requiring anything else, containing several fine stories: newly printed. Paris, the widow of Thielman Kerver, 16 February 1522 [1523 n.st.]. In-8 on [132] ff. (marked A-P8 Q4 aa8); red morocco, triple gilt rule, plain decorated spine, the letter B in a small medallion at the foot, interior lace, gilt edges (18th-century binding). A rare edition of the Grandes Heures de Kerver, the first commissioned by Yolande Bonhomme following the death of her husband Thielman Kerver. It is dated 16 February 1523 (New Style) and includes a calendar. The edition is printed in Gothic type, in red and black. The text of the Hours is in Latin, except for the quatrains included within the woodcut borders, which are in French. The supplementary section of 8 ff., which is present in this copy, contains texts in French: ‘The Recommendations for the Departed’, ‘The Commandments of God’ and ‘The Commandments of the Church’. Abundant and remarkable woodcut illustrations, including Thielman Kerver’s mark on the title page, the Anatomical Man, 12 oval figures in the calendar for the years 1523–1536 (including the famous scene of the school spanking, the first depiction of a disciplinary punishment), 46 large engravings set within ornate architectural frames, often featuring twisted columns, plus the Instruments of the Passion and 30 vignettes depicting various saints. A magnificent copy printed on paper, fully lined, in a beautiful and very fresh 18th-century binding. From the library of Henri Joliet, a late 19th-century collector from Dijon, with an ex-libris.
