[HOURS]. The Black Book of Hours of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Vienna, Austrian State Printing Office, 1930. 2 small quarto volumes, including a colour facsimile volume bound in red velvet over wooden boards, adorned with gilded metal decoration: scattered with flame motifs on the covers, raised dots at the corners and in the centre, and rich openwork clasps with enamelled medallions, plain spine, gilt edges, burgundy percaline slipcase; and a text volume bound in burgundy percaline, with a slipcase (publisher’s binding). A sumptuous colour reproduction of a famous Flemish manuscript. The Black Book of Hours, known as the Galeazzo Maria Sforza Book of Hours, illuminated in Bruges during the third quarter of the 15th century, is notable for having been written in gold and silver letters on black-dyed parchment leaves. It is now held in Vienna (ÖNB, Cod. 1856). A copy numbered in Roman numerals in its rich publisher’s binding modelled on the original, complete with the text volume by O. Smital, translated into French by André Robert and illustrated with 15 plates of photogravures. Damaged ribbon markers, split slipcase, spine of the text volume faded and stained.
