LA PERRIÈRE (Guillaume de). *Le Miroir politicque*, a work no less useful than necessary for all monarchs, kings, princes, lords, magistrates, and other superintendents and governors of republics. Lyon, Macé Bonhomme, 1555. Folio, brown calfskin, double blind-stamped band with fleurons at the corners, small circular medallion in the centre, blank spine, smooth edges (contemporary binding). A very rare first edition of this treatise on government composed by the Toulouse humanist Guillaume de La Perrière (1499–1554), official historiographer of the city of Toulouse and author of a famous book of emblems, *Le Théâtre des bons engins* (1539). La Perrière spent fifteen years writing *Le Miroir politicque*, but he died before it was published. The work is dedicated to the Toulouse prelate Jean de Bertrand (1482–1560), Bishop of Comminges and Keeper of the Seals from 1551 to 1559. An interesting woodcut illustration, featuring the printer’s mark on the title page, the coat of arms of the city of Toulouse on the reverse, nineteen family trees and ten figures in the text (six of which are repeated), which are quite remarkable; Baudrier regards these as the last works of Georges Reverdy. ‘These vignettes, though few in number, are of the utmost interest for the history of woodcut engraving in Lyon,’ he writes, citing in particular the allegory of Prudence, p. 55. A handwritten motto of the period at the top of the title page: ‘Tout en bons & loyaulx Termes’. Restored binding, spine replaced, endpapers renewed; slight worm damage to the upper corner of the first ten leaves; the quires are slightly foxed; a few small water stains and scattered spots.
