Description
[LORRIS (Guillaume de) and Jean de MEUNG]. *Le Rommant de la Rose*. Newly revised and corrected in addition to previous editions. Paris, Arnoul and Charles L’Angelier, 1538. Small 8vo, black morocco, double blind-stamped band, spine similarly decorated, interior lace, edges gilt on marbled paper (19th-century binding). The last early edition of *Le Roman de la Rose*, which was not reprinted until 1735. This is a reprint of the edition published the previous year, shared amongst some ten booksellers, including Pierre Vidoue, who was undoubtedly the printer. It was based on the 1529 edition in round type, to which it corresponds page for page and even line for line, including the engravings. The text is that of Galliot du Pré’s 1526 edition, revised by Clément Marot and containing, for the first time, the prologue generally attributed to him. A very fine Gothic print, illustrated with 49 woodcut vignettes (including repetitions). The title, in red and black, is adorned with the small mark ‘aux anges liés’. This iconographic cycle, copied from the 1529 edition, has ‘the merit of illustrating the text very closely and demonstrating a genuine effort at renewal ’ (Brun, p. 241). A copy finely bound in the 19th century. Handwritten ex-libris on the title page: Nicolaus vicarius chamberiac. possessor [Chambéry], 1574. Copy with narrow margins; damage to the headbands and running titles; the final leaf, comprising only a printer’s mark, is missing; minimal worm damage to the gutter edge; minor, insignificant water stains.
