PARADIN (Guillaume). Memoirs on the History of Lyon. Lyon, Antoine Gryphius, 1573. – RUBYS (Claude de). The Privileges, Freedoms and Immunities Granted by the Most Christian Kings to the Consuls, Aldermen, Tenants and Inhabitants of the City of Lyon, and to Their Descendants. Ibid., 1574. 2 parts in one folio volume, ivory-coloured vellum Bradel binding with overlaps, double gilt line, plain spine adorned with a frame featuring a double gilt line, red edges (L. Pouillet). First edition of this important history of Lyon, which is one of Antoine Gryphe’s finest prints. The title page is adorned with a remarkable wood-engraved frame (reproduced in Baudrier). Guillaume Paradin (1510–1590), a Burgundian humanist and canon originally from Cuiseaux, is also the author of a famous *Histoire de nostre temps* (1550) and a *Chronique de Savoye* (1552). He drew extensively on Claude Bellièvre’s manuscript *Lugdunum priscum* in compiling this work. This is followed, as is only to be expected, by Claude de Rubys’s work on the privileges granted to the people of Lyon by the kings of France, in its second edition. This text was intended to be appended to Paradin’s *Histoire de Lyon* from its rare first edition of 1573 onwards. From the libraries of the orientalist Charles Schefer (1820–1898), long-standing president of the École des Langues orientales, with bookplate, and Jean Estève, with bookplate. Handwritten bookplate on the title page dated 1679. A small watermark at the top, a wormhole in the lower corner. Baudrier, VIII, 362–364 – Brunet, IV, 359 – Gouron & Terrin, nos. 1142–43.
