PLATEA (Francisco de). *Opus restitutionum, usurarum, excommunicationum*. Venice, Johann of Cologne and Johann Manthen of Gerretzen, 25 March 1474. In-4, [151] (of 152) folios, including 2 blank folios; goatskin over wooden boards, handwritten title labels on both covers and the spine, traces of metal clasps (contemporary binding). Fifth edition of this treatise on restitution, usury and excommunication composed by the Franciscan canonist and theologian Francisco de Platea, born in Bologna and died in 1460. It is regarded as one of the earliest printed works devoted to economics, although it also deals with moral, religious, legal and political issues. The first edition, without place or date, was printed in Padua around 1472. A very fine and rare Venetian incunabulum, printed in Gothic type, in two columns, on the presses of Johann of Cologne and Johann Manthen, who had been active in Venice since 1471 and had been partners since 1474. The two German printers had initially been partners with the brothers Johann and Wendelin of Speyer, who had introduced printing to Venice in 1468. This copy is rubricated in red, blue and yellow, adorned with handwritten initials in red or blue and some attractive leaf-shaped initials in brown ink, highlighted with red and blue. The copy is complete with the last two blank leaves, covered with old handwritten annotations over 2 pp. One text leaf is missing (f. 84 i.e. [g10]). A wormhole running through the first leaves, marginal water stain and a few scattered halos and soiling. Loss of leather, wormholes and stains to the binding; missing clasp staples.
