PLINY THE ELDER. *Historia naturalis*. Paris, Nicolas Savetier for Jean Petit, 1526. 2 parts in one folio volume, marbled half-basane (18th-century binding). A monumental encyclopaedia in which Pliny has encapsulated the natural science of his time. An architectural-style title frame bearing the name of Jean Petit. The extensive index, printed by Nicolas Savetier on 31 October 1526, features a beautiful wood-engraved title frame. A very rare feature: the lines on each page of text are numbered from 1 to 60 to facilitate searching the index. Contemporary marginal annotations (sometimes trimmed by the bookbinder). An old stamp on the title page. Worn binding, split joints, upper cap missing, minor repair to the title page, worm-eaten areas on the reverse of the flyleaves, water stains.
