Description
[ROMAN PONTIFICAL]. Missæ episcopales pro sacris ordinibus conferendis secundum ritum Sacrosanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ. Venice, heirs of Lucantonio Giunta, 1563. Folio, fawn morocco, double border of two gilt fillets with fleurons at the corners, a medallion of gilt branches in the centre, plain, unmarked spine decorated lengthwise with a pattern of gilt branches, plain edges (contemporary binding). A sumptuous edition of the Tridentine Pontifical published by Girolamo Maccabei of Toscanella, Bishop of Castro and Prefect of the Papal Chapel. This fine folio volume comes from the Venetian presses of Tommaso and Giovanni Maria Giunta, where it was printed in two columns, in red and black, with the musical notation for plainchant. The text is set entirely in Gothic type, with the exception of Maccabei’s appendix, which is set in italics and roman type. The work is adorned with one hundred woodcuts within the text (some of which are repeated), including a remarkable full-page Crucifixion and a historiated border comprising ten vignettes, both of which are repeated seven times. A copy bound in a luxurious, decorated morocco binding of the period. The seal of a religious institution is repeated on the first and last pages. One leaf is missing (f. 147).
