[SCHÄUFELEIN (Hans)]. Doctrina, vita et passio Jesu Christi, juxta Novi Testamenti fidem et ordinem, artificiosissime effigiata. The Teaching, Life and Death of Jesus Christ, the contents of the entire New Testament skilfully depicted. Frankfurt am Main, Christian Egenolff, 1537. Small quarto, [38] (of 40) folios (marked A–K4); Jansenist red morocco, gilt head (P. Goy & C. Vilaine). An extremely rare first edition. This magnificent woodcut series on the life of Christ comprises 71 (of 73) full-page woodcuts by Hans Schäufelein (1482–1539), a German painter and engraver trained in Albrecht Dürer’s workshop and deeply influenced by his style. Each engraving is accompanied by a verse in Latin and German. The title page bears Schäuffelin’s monogram engraved within a small spade (Schaufel in German). Christian Egenolff reprinted the work twice, in 1542 and 1550. The USTC lists only nine copies of this edition, of which only one is in France (Mazarine) and one in the United States (New York Public Library). A restored copy, carefully washed and glued, in an excellent modern binding. Missing are the second leaf (f. A2) – decorated with two woodcuts depicting the Annunciation and the Nativity – and the final blank leaf (f. K4); four engravings are stained (ff. A4–B1), modesty retouching on two others (ff. A3r and D4r), a few scattered stains, and the title reinforced in the margin.
