SUETONIUS. *Vitæ XII Cæsarum*. Bologna, Benedetto di Ettore [Faelli], 5 April 1493. Folio volume of [334] folios, sow’s hide on wooden boards, four corner pieces, a central boss and two wrought-metal clasps on each cover, title cartouche on the front cover, a 104 cm long chain attached to the top of the back cover, transparent slipcase (Pastiche binding). First edition accompanied by a commentary by Filippo Beroaldo (1453–1505), the renowned Bolognese humanist. Printed in Roman type, with the gloss in the margins of the original text, produced by Benedetto Faelli, a printer active in Bologna from 1487 to 1523, whose typographic mark on a black background adorns the colophon. The book is chained in an excellent pastiche binding, fitted with metal fittings and a chain of antique style. From the library of Prince Nicholas Petrovich of Oldenburg (1840–1886), collector and philanthropist, great-grandson of Emperor Paul I of Russia, with an ex-libris stamp and a crowned monogram on the title page.
