Description
THOMAS AQUINAS (Saint). Tertia pars summæsancti Thomæ. Venice, Boneto Locatello for Ottaviano Scoto, 1493. Folio, embossed sow’s hide on wooden boards, scrollwork and bird motifs framed by cold-tooled fillets on the covers, spine with four raised bands, ornate metal clasps (16th-century binding). A PRECIOUS AND RARE VENETIAN INCUNABULUM, printed in Gothic type in two columns by Boneto Locatello, who worked in close collaboration with the bookseller Ottaviano Scoto from 1487 to 1498. This volume contains the third and final part of Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologica, presented on its own. A PARTIALLY STAINED COPY IN A BEAUTIFUL STAMPED SOW’S LEATHER BINDING, complete with its clasps. The final leaf bearing Scoto’s mark (f. C6) is missing. There are wormholes on the first few leaves and a small worm-eaten gallery in the margin of the last four leaves. The upper cap is damaged.
