Description
VIRGIL. The Works of Virgil, with ten commentaries. – Opuscula. – Æneis. Lyon, Jean Crespin, 1529. 3 parts in one folio volume, fawn sheepskin, double framing of cold-stamped serrated scrolls, spine with five raised bands, smooth edges (18th-century binding). A very fine illustrated edition of Virgil’s works, published by the humanist and publisher Josse Bade, with Virgil’s text in the centre and the glosses of ten commentators in small type around it. Remarkable illustrations comprising some 200 woodcuts within the text, often occupying half a page. This iconography is taken from the edition produced by Jacques Sacon in 1517, which in turn was modelled on the Strasbourg edition printed by Grüninger in 1502. The general title, printed in red and black, is set within an elegant wood-engraved frame, adorned with foliage and putti. Each of the three parts has its own pagination and colophon. From the libraries of the Congregation of the Mission in Bourg, with a handwritten bookplate; Joseph Olivier, of Bourg, with an 18th-century bookplate; and Georges Vergand, with a bookplate designed by Brunelleschi. The final leaf of the *Aeneid* (f. †8) is missing. Significant water damage at the foot of the volume with marginal restoration on several leaves; title leaf mended; binding restored; endpapers replaced.
