BELLORI (Giovanni Pietro). *Veteres arcus Augustorum triumphis insignes ex reliquiis quæ Romæ adhuc supersunt*. Rome, at the Church of Santa Maria della Pace [Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi], 1690. Folio, marbled calfskin, decorated spine, variegated edges (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the finest books on Roman triumphal arches. A masterpiece of Italian engraving, the volume contains a portrait of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, grand-nephew of Pope Alexander VIII and Vice-Chancellor of the Church, engraved after a drawing by Pietro Lucatelli, and 46 plates (nos. 3–15, 20–52), including 23 double-page plates, drawn and etched by Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635–1700), a painter and engraver from Perugia who had been a pupil of Nicolas Poussin. This copy belongs to state B, with a collet correcting the word ‘Augustorum’ on the title page. The following has been bound at the end of the volume: HOLSTE (Lukas). *Vetus pictura nymphæum referens commentariolo explicata*. Rome, Impr. Barberina, Michele Ercole, 1676. First edition of this 12-page pamphlet, illustrated with a fine title vignette featuring a portrait of the author, two end-piece engravings and a large double-page plate engraved in intaglio. The German humanist Lukas Holste (1596–1661) was a librarian at the Vatican. A copy belonging to Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694–1774), the famous engraver, Parisian print dealer and collector, and the Swiss painter Jean-Antoine Julien, known as Julien de Parme (1736–1799), bearing this handwritten note signed by Julien de Parme on a flyleaf: ‘Purchased at the Mariette sale, 36 lt.’ The volume does indeed appear in the sale catalogue of the collection of the late Mr Mariette (1775, no. 215). Born in Cavigliano and having settled in Paris in 1759, the painter Jean-Antoine Julien (1736–1799), known as Julien de Parme, produced works in the Italian Neoclassical style that were ahead of their time but did not meet with great success during his lifetime; his name remained relatively unknown until the exhibition devoted to him by the Louvre in 1998, organised at the instigation of Pierre Rosenberg. Handwritten bookplates by Robert Burn, dated Cambridge 1869, and by W. Morris, dated 1925, on a flyleaf. A handwritten letter from Andrew E. Burn, vicar of Halifax, dated 1915, is enclosed with the volume. Restored binding with losses; spine rebuilt (title label and four of the seven panels reattached); minor foxing, mainly marginal; very minor marginal repair on plate 42.
