Description
BRANTÔME. Memoirs… containing the lives of the illustrious ladies of France of his time. Leiden, Jean Sambix the Younger, 1665. In-12, grained calfskin, double gilt rule, monogram at the corners, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with the same monogram repeated, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition, published posthumously, of the first volume of the works of Brantôme (1540?–1614), published at the expense of the Steucker brothers, printers and booksellers in The Hague. The nine other volumes, published between 1665 and 1722, contain the *Lives of Gallant Ladies*, the *Lives of Illustrious Men and Great French and Foreign Commanders*, and finally the *Anecdotes of the Court of France*. A copy bearing the coat of arms and cipher of Hélie du Fresnoy (1614–1698), a distinguished 17th-century collector from Picardy. First clerk to Chancellor Le Tellier, and subsequently to the Marquis de Louvois, ‘this bibliophile had his books bound in very beautiful and sumptuous bindings, executed by the finest craftsmen, notably Le Gascon’ (Olivier).
