Description
[BRISSEAU (Pierre)]. Letters from Mr B. M. D. R. [Brisseau, the King’s physician] to a physician friend of his concerning the troops’ hospitals. No place, no date [1692]. 2 parts in one small 8vo volume, red morocco, triple gilt rule, smooth spine decorated with grotesque motifs, gilt title running lengthwise, interior lace, gilt edges (18th-century binding). The only edition of this extremely rare treatise on military hospitals, written by Pierre Brisseau (1626–1717), Doctor of Medicine from the Faculty of Montpellier, who served for many years in the military hospitals of Tournai and Mons. The two letters, dated 1 April 1691 and 15 January 1692 in Tournai, are illustrated with two woodcut figures: the first depicts the four letters attached to the bedposts to regulate the patients’ meals; the second, the plan of a hospital ward with forty beds. A finely bound copy. From the library of Mr Jeanjean, a solicitor in Lodève, with a handwritten bookplate. Foliate spots.
