CÆREMONIALE EPISCOPORUM, revised by order of Clement VIII, Supreme Pontiff. Paris, Societas typographica librorum officii ecclesiastici, 1633. Folio, olive morocco, decorated in the Du Seuil style with fleurs-de-lis at the corners, coat of arms in the centre, spine adorned with a field of fleurs-de-lis, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A luxurious Parisian edition of the ceremonial book for bishops published during the pontificate of Clement VIII in 1600, following the Council of Trent. It is dedicated to Pope Urban VIII. The text is printed in red and black, in two columns, with attractive botanically inspired engraved initials and music notated in two staves. An elegant engraving in intaglio style, comprising a titleplate engraved by Michel van Lochom and 68 half-page illustrations, with one full-page illustration, depicting the daily life and duties of a bishop. A copy bound in olive-coloured morocco in the ‘Du Seuil’ style, bearing the coat of arms of Thomas Chambers, the Scottish chaplain to Cardinal Richelieu, who studied at the College of the Scots in Rome from 1630 to 1637. Handwritten bookplate on the title page. Some skin wear and a corner missing; two split clasps; spine worn; some quires have turned brown.
