CHORIER (Nicolas). A General History of the Dauphiné. Grenoble, Philippe Charvys, 1661. Folio, red morocco, double gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, marbled edges (18th-century binding). First edition of the first history of the Dauphiné. The volume is adorned with an allegorical vignette on the title page and a headband bearing the arms of Hugues de Lionne, signed with the monogram NB. A second volume, described by Maignien as ‘highly sought-after and very rare’, was published in Lyon in 1672. It is very difficult to find both volumes together. Nicolas Chorier (1612–1692), a lawyer and the King’s prosecutor in Grenoble, regarded by some as the first historian of the Dauphiné, is also the author of a famous erotic work, *L’Académie des dames, ou les Sept entretiens galants d’Alosia*. A superb copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms of Marguerite-Delphine de Valbelle de Tourves (1705–1784), daughter of Cosme de Valbelle, Marquis de Tourves, President of the Parliament of Provence, and Anne-Marie de Demandols. In 1723, she married her cousin André-Geoffroy de Valbelle (1701–1735), Marquis of Rians, Baron of Meyrargues, Grand Seneschal of Marseille and First Baron of the Dauphiné. The binding of the volume is of Provençal workmanship. There is a very slight tear at the top edge, and a small marginal stain on the final leaves.
