Description
[CORNEILLE (Pierre)]. *The Imitation of Christ*, translated and paraphrased into French verse by P. Corneille. Printed in Rouen by L. Maurry; Paris, Robert Ballard, Paris, 1659. 2 parts in one in-12 volume, red morocco, Du Seuil-style decoration, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, interior lace, edges gilt on marbled paper (contemporary binding). A rare edition of Corneille’s translation, illustrated with 2 frontispiece titles and 110 full-page plates, some signed by Campion, David and Chauveau. ‘Corneille’s translation was produced between 1651 and 1656, during the playwright’s early years of retirement. It is original in two respects: it is the first translation into French and in verse, as the poet explains in his preface…’ (Tony Gheeraert). A fully paid-up copy. A fine morocco binding bearing the coat of arms of the financier Paulin Prondre de Guermantes (1650–1723). Minor scuffing and restoration to the binding, a few foxing spots and minor repairs to the leaves.
