Description
FÉNELON. The Education of Girls. Paris: Pierre Aubouin, Pierre Emery and Charles Clousier, 1687. In-12, blue Jansenist morocco, lace lining, edges gilt on marbled paper (Thibaron-Joly). First edition. This is one of the earliest works advocating for the education of girls, in which Fénelon draws on his teaching experience as head of the Institut des nouvelles catholiques, a Parisian boarding school dedicated to the ‘re-education’ of young Protestant women who had converted to Catholicism. A copy from the second printing, in accordance with Tchemerzine’s remarks, bound without the two folios from Abbé Fleury’s *Catalogue de livres de dévotion*. A copy beautifully produced by Thibaron-Joly, the renowned Parisian workshop formed by the former Trautz craftsman and the gilder Joly between 1874 and 1885. It has been carefully washed and glued.
