Description
FERRAND (Jean). *Disquisitio reliquiaria, sive de suspicienda et suspecta earumdem numero reliquiarum, quæ in diversis ecclesiis servantur, multitudine*. Lyon, Laurent Anisson, 1647. In-4, red morocco, double frame of gilded lace, one of which consists of a juxtaposition of a metal plate bearing a crowned portrait, decorated spine, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the author’s most important work, which he dedicated to Armand de Bourbon-Conti, Abbot of Cluny. The Jesuit theologian Jean Ferrand (1586–1672) examines relics from a historical and archaeological perspective, endeavouring to set aside aspects purely related to devotion, drawing on an extraordinary body of scholarly and critical research. An interesting red morocco binding, probably from Lyon, adorned with a pretty lace-patterned metal frame depicting the portrait of a young boy in classical style, surmounted by a royal crown and supported by two seahorses separated by a fleur-de-lis, a design that appears to allude to the very young Louis XIV, who had recently ascended the throne. From the libraries of Jacques-François Asselin de Villequier (1759–1833), First President of the Royal Court of Rouen and Member of Parliament for Seine-Inférieure, with a coat-of-arms ex-libris (AFCEL: A0730); later owned by Gérard Sangnier (2002, no. 407). A tear in the lower corner of the title page has been repaired, with the loss of a few letters. Foxing.
