FINE DE BRIANVILLE (Claude-Oronce). Sacred History in Pictures, for His Grace the Dauphin, with explanations based on the text of Scripture and some chronological notes. Paris, Charles de Sercy, [1675]–1677. 3 volumes in one in-12 volume, red morocco, triple gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (18th-century binding). First collected edition of this sacred history composed for the Dauphin by his tutor, the historiographer Fine de Brianville (1608–1674). The three volumes were originally published separately between 1670 and 1675. The third volume is here in its first edition, dated 1675. This edition is sought after for its illustrations, drawn and engraved by Sébastien Leclerc, comprising a frontispiece bearing the Dauphin’s coat of arms, a heraldic header and 138 half-page vignettes. Copy entirely marked in red ink. A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Françoise-Huguette Guyard de Changey (1749–1825), wife of Étienne-François Prévost de Chantemesle, counsellor to the King. During her widowhood, she became the mistress of Louis-François de Bourbon (1734–1814), Prince of Conti, whom she accompanied into exile. One page is cracked and one corner is slightly scuffed. In the second part, folio ã2 has been bound by mistake between pages 16 and 17. OHR, 2188.
