GOMBERVILLE (Marin Le Roy de). *La Doctrine des mœurs, tirée de la philosophie des Stoïques*. Paris: Louis Sevestre for Pierre Daret, 1646. Folio, red morocco leather, gilt border, decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (18th-century binding). First edition of this sumptuous book of emblems, commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin for the education of the young Louis XIV. It is one of the finest books published by the engraver Pierre Daret. It is adorned with a frontispiece title page (repeated at the head of the second part), a portrait of the author, a separate plate (one of two) and 103 large emblematic illustrations within the text inspired by Otto van Veen’s *Emblemata Horatiana*, to which are added a title vignette, four headbands, four initials and a repeated tailpiece, all engraved on copper by Pierre Daret. A very fine copy in 18th-century red morocco. The introductory allegorical plate depicting Mazarin, Minerva and the young Louis XIV is missing. A few stains and scattered light foxing; a whitish mark on the front cover. Landwehr, Romanic, no. 476 – Chatelain, no. 68 – Praz, 402.
