GREGORY OF NYSSA. *Opera omnia quæ exstant*, in two volumes. Paris, Michel Sonnius, 1605. 3 parts in one folio volume, sow’s hide stamped onto wooden boards, triple cold-tooled border, one of which features the effigies of the Evangelists, cold-tooled coat of arms in the centre, spine with five raised bands, smooth edges, traces of clasps (contemporary Germanic binding). First edition, edited and annotated by the Bordeaux Jesuit Fronton du Duc (1554–1628), of the complete works of Gregory of Nyssa, translated into Latin by various authors and printed in two columns. It was jointly financed by four Parisian booksellers: Michel Sonnius, Sébastien Nivelle, Marc Orry and Claude Morel. This edition, unknown to Brunet, is extremely rare – and particularly so in the name of Michel Sonnius. The USTC lists no copies of this edition in public collections. Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335–c. 395), a mystic and theologian, Bishop of Nyssa in Cappadocia and a Church Father, was originally from Neocaesarea (Niksar in Turkey). He was the brother of Basil of Caesarea and Peter of Sebaste. A copy bound in pigskin, stamped with the coat of arms of an abbot of Fultenbach, a former Benedictine abbey in Bavaria, within the Diocese of Augsburg. From the library of Thomas Hopffer, of Augsburg, with a handwritten bookplate on the upper inside front cover. Worn binding; leather missing from the edge of the front cover; clasps missing; wormholes on the first few leaves. Sommervogel III, 236, no. 14 (catalogue by M. Orry) – USTC 6000538 (catalogue by M.
