HERODOTUS. The Histories, translated into French by P. Du-Ryer. Second edition, revised, corrected and expanded with marginal annotations. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1658. Folio, grained calfskin, triple gilt rule, crowned monogram in the spandrels, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with the same monogram, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Second edition of Pierre Du Ryer’s French translation, revised, corrected and expanded with annotations. It was first published by Antoine de Sommaville in 1645. The edition is adorned with a beautiful mythological frontispiece by François Chauveau, a title vignette by Jean Mathieu, and a copper-engraved header and initial letter. A copy bearing the coat of arms and cipher of Philippe d’Orléans (1640–1701), known as ‘Monsieur’, the younger brother of Louis XIV. The second son of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, he was granted the title of Duke of Anjou at birth and, after 1660, Duke of Orléans. This provenance is particularly rare. Upper cap missing (one split clasp), a corner missing, faint angular water stains at the beginning of the volume. OHR, 2562/1-7-9.
