Description
JEAN VI CANTACUZÈNE. Ιστοριών βιϐλία Δ'. Historiarum libri IV. Paris, Royal Printing Office, 1645. 3 folio volumes, red morocco leather, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with a repeated crowned cipher, roulette on the edges, gilt interior lace, gilt edges on marbled paper (contemporary binding). A sumptuous edition published as part of the famous ‘Byzantine du Louvre’ series of the Histories of John VI Cantacuzene (1295–1383), Byzantine emperor from 1347 until his abdication in 1354. This collection of Byzantine historical sources, edited by Father Labbe at Colbert’s request, was published between 1644 and 1711 by the Royal Printing House of the Louvre in 36 large folio volumes.
The original Greek text and the Latin translation, edited and annotated by the Jesuits Jacob Spanmüller, known as Pontanus (1542–1626), and Jacob Gretser (1562–1625), are printed in two columns.
A superb copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms and royal cipher of Louis XIV.
From the libraries of the Princes of Liechtenstein, with bookplate, and Roger Peyrefitte (1976, I, no. 25), with bookplate.
The upper joint of the first volume is cracked; there are a few foxing spots and the pages are uniformly foxed.
