Description
LALOUBÈRE (Antoine de). *Quadratura circuli et hyperbolæ segmentorum*. Toulouse, Pierre Bosc, 1651. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, soft vellum (contemporary binding). A rare first edition of the principal work by the mathematician Antoine de Laloubère. The text is illustrated with numerous geometric figures engraved on copper. Antoine de Laloubère (1600–1664), a Jesuit priest who taught at the College of Toulouse, is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern integral calculus, alongside Cavalieri, Fermat, Vincertio, Kepler and Torricelli… He was also the first to study the properties of the helix. In 1658, a fierce controversy arose between him and Blaise Pascal concerning the solution to the roulette problem. In 1660, he provided an (erroneous) solution to Pascal’s problems on cycloids. The *Prolegomena* (80 pp.) were bound together with the *Elementa tetragonismica* (624 pp.). Signature on an endpaper and on the front cover: Bertelé. Water stain at the bottom of the volume; repaired tear on p. 599, with no loss of text; slight marginal loss on pp. 442 and 17. Sommervogel, V, 32, no. 2.
