Description
[LANCELOT (Claude)]. A Summary of the New Method for Learning the Principles of the Greek Language Easily and in a Short Time. Paris, Antoine Vitré, 1655. 8vo, Jansenist garnet morocco, interior lace, edges gilt on marbled paper (Hardy). A very rare first edition of this abridgement of the Port-Royal method for teaching Greek.
Claude Lancelot was one of the first teachers at the Port-Royal primary schools. He was the author of the famous *Port-Royal Grammar*, published in 1660, as well as two *New Methods for Learning Latin and Greek*, published in 1644 and 1655 respectively. This *Abrégé* for schoolchildren’s use was published at the same time as the *Nouvelle méthode grecque*.
It is worth noting that Racine owed his knowledge of Greek to Claude Lancelot.

From the Henry Houssaye Library (1912, no. 66), with bookplate. The Academician left this handwritten, initialled annotation on one of the volume’s endpapers, dated 1875: ‘The so-called Port-Royal Method, by Claude Lancelot. – A first edition, copies of which in such a state of preservation are exceptionally rare: we all know how schoolchildren treat their textbooks!”
