MARCHESINI (Angelo Maria). *L'Araldo evangelico*, which calls upon souls rebelling against heaven, from beneath Lucifer’s infernal banners, to return under the glorious standards of submission to the crown of the Almighty. Venice, Andrea Poletti, 1686. In-4, red morocco, richly decorated with straight and curved panels forming interlaced ribbons adorned with putti, sprigs, and scrolls of small silver and gold filigree, dotted with stars in the spandrels, coat of arms painted in the central oval, decorated spine, gilt edges (contemporary Italian binding). A rare first edition. This collection of sermons composed by Angelo Maria Marchesini (1615–1690), a Capuchin preacher from Vicenza, is conceived as a manual of sacred eloquence and preaching. It contains five cycles of sermons specifically written for the Forty Hours’ Devotion, a major form of worship during the Counter-Reformation, which emerged in the 16th century in the diocese of Milan. The edition is adorned with a beautiful frontispiece engraved with a burin by Isabella Piccini (1644–1734), daughter of the engraver Giacomo Piccini and a nun at the Convent of Santa Croce in Venice. A fine copy in a lavish fanfare binding bearing the painted coat of arms of the edition’s dedicatee, Luigi Priuli (1650–1720), commendatory abbot of Saint Zeno in Verona. This Venetian prelate, nephew of Cardinal Pietro Basadonna, was himself created a cardinal by Pope Clement XI in 1712 and appointed Camerlengo of the Sacred College in 1720. A superb binding in excellent condition. The painted coat of arms shows only slight scuffing. A repair has been carried out, sparing the text at the foot of the title page. A few scattered foxing spots and small marginal stains.
