MAZARIN (Jules). Letters of Cardinal Mazarin, revealing the secrets of the negotiations for the Peace of the Pyrenees. Amsterdam, Henri Vetstein [sic], 1693. 2 parts in one in-12 volume, brown morocco, broad lace of small gilded iron links, decorated spine, interior lace, lavallière morocco linings decorated with the same lace as the covers, edges gilt on marbled paper (contemporary binding). New edition, expanded to include a second part. This correspondence primarily concerns the negotiations that led to the Treaty of the Pyrenees in November 1659, bringing the Franco-Spanish conflict to an end. In some letters, the minister also touches upon the young King Louis XIV’s passion for his niece, Marie Mancini. The first edition was published in Amsterdam in 1690. A fine copy in a curious double-lined morocco binding. A handwritten note on a blank leaf quoting from the *Mémoires* of the Abbé de Choisy. Minor worm damage to one spine rib, slightly rubbed edges, foxing.
