Description

[MÉNESTRIER (Claude-François)]. The Temple of Wisdom Open to All Peoples. Designs for the Paintings in the Great Courtyard of the College of the Most Holy Trinity. Lyon, Antoine Molin, 1663. 8vo, red morocco, spine decorated with gilded lions, interior lace, gilded headband, untrimmed (B. Magnin). A first edition of great rarity. Ménestrier had designed the paintings for the Great Courtyard of the Jesuit College of the Holy Trinity in Lyon, which were executed under his supervision in 1662. In this work, he provides a detailed description of them, with all the explanations necessary for understanding his compositions. The work is dedicated to Archbishop Camille de Neufville. This copy is complete with the ‘Description of the Ornaments of the Entrance and the Gallery’ (pp. 161–182)—the final section which, as Renard notes, ‘is missing from most copies’—and with the table of contents.
