MÉZERAY (Eudes de). A Chronological Summary or Extract from the History of France. Volume II [standalone]. Paris, Thomas Jolly, 1667. In-4, red morocco, ‘à la Du Seuil’ decoration, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this abridgement of the History of France by Mézeray (1610–1683), compiled by the author himself, who was the King’s historiographer and permanent secretary of the Académie française. The text is illustrated with intaglio-engraved portraits of the kings of France. A copy in red morocco in the ‘Du Seuil’ style bearing the Colbert coat of arms, with a handwritten bookplate on the title page from the *Bibliotheca Colbertina* (1728, II, no. 8751). It is interesting to note that it was following the publication of this work that Colbert, Louis XIV’s chief minister and controller of finances, had Mézeray’s pension withdrawn, as the latter had had it printed therein that, under the Merovingian kings, the people had the right to tax themselves. The second volume presented on its own (of three), beginning with King Philip of Valois and ending at the close of Henry II’s reign. Hinges, corners and caps worn; one joint split; interior slightly scorched.
