A very rare collection relating to the Archdiocese of Milan in the first half of the 17th century, comprising six works: 1° BORROMEO (Frederico). Three others bring together the proceedings and decisions published during the 31st, 33rd, 34th and 35th diocesan synods of Milan, convened and presided over by Federico Borromeo (1564–1631), Cardinal Archbishop of Milan from 1595 to 1631, and his successors Cesare Monti (1593–1650) and Alfonso Litta (1608–1679). A fine copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms and cipher of the great Colbert, with the handwritten ex-libris of the Bibliotheca Colbertina (1728, III, no. 13544) on the title page, now crossed out. Louis XIV’s minister had, with the assistance of Pierre de Carcavi, built up a scholarly library renowned throughout Europe. On his death, it passed into the hands of his eldest son Jean-Baptiste, Marquis de Seignelay, then to his younger son Jacques-Nicolas, Archbishop of Rouen, and finally to his grandson Charles-Éléonor, before being dispersed at public auction, between 1728 and 1732, in no fewer than 111 sessions. The title page also bears the handwritten bookplates of the Collège Louis-le-Grand (Colleg. Paris. Societ. Jesu), which has also been struck through, and of the Colégio de Santa Rita of the Discalced Augustinians of Coimbra, with a seal.
