POOLE (Matthew). Synopsis of the Commentaries of Various Critics and Other Interpreters of Holy Scripture. Volume I, comprising all the books from Genesis to Job, divided into two parts. [Part One]. London, J. Flesher & T. Roycroft, at Cornelius Bee’s, 1669. Folio, lemon morocco, double Du Seuil frame, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this important compilation of biblical commentaries, drawn from rabbinical sources and Catholic exegesis by the British theologian Matthew Poole (1624–1679). It is printed in two volumes in Latin and Hebrew. This volume is the first of the work, which comprises nine volumes, forming five tomes. A prestigious copy on large-format paper, bound in lemon-coloured morocco bearing the coat of arms of the bibliophile Charron de Menars. Jean-Jacques Charron (1643–1718), Marquis de Menars and Baron de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, was Colbert’s brother-in-law, having married his sister Marie in 1648. A distinguished bibliophile of the Grand Siècle, he had acquired the entire library of President de Thou in one go to add it to his own, which he sold in 1706 to Cardinal de Rohan, who bequeathed it to his grandnephew, Charles de Rohan-Soubise (1715–1787). Enriched by these successive additions, the library, comprising fifty thousand volumes, was finally dispersed at auction in 1789. This volume was described as complete in the catalogue of the Prince of Soubise’s sale (1789, no. 355, ‘5 tomes in 9 folio volumes, large paper’). The upper cover of the volume bears the ‘Soubise call number’ B3, and on an endpaper, the following handwritten note: ‘Purchased at the Prince of Soubise’s sale for five hundred and ten livres on 20 January 1789’. From the library of Ludovic Froissart (1925–2018), with an ex-libris. A sumptuous volume in exceptional condition, presented without the eight subsequent volumes.
