Description
QUINCARNON (Charles Malo de). The Foundation and Antiquities of the Collegiate, Canonical and Curial Basilica of St Paul in Lyon. N.p. [Lyon], published at the author’s expense, n.d. [c. 1682]. Small 12mo, red morocco, double border of gilt fillets and fleurons at the corners, decorated spine, fillet on the edges, interior lace, gilt edges (Bruyère). An extremely rare first edition of this work on the Church of St Paul, one of the oldest in Lyon. The title page bears the ‘Dulce et amarum’ rose mark, which, a hundred years earlier, had been that of the Lyon printer François Didier (died 1581). A portrait of Saint Paul, engraved on copper by Marin Visselet, is printed on the reverse of the third introductory leaf. The author of this book, Sieur de Quincarnon, ‘a former cavalry lieutenant and artillery commissioner’, is known to us only through two extremely rare pamphlets which contain highly curious details concerning two churches in Lyon. The first is entitled: *Les Antiquités et la fondation de la métropole des Gaules...*, Lyon, Matthieu Libéral, 1673, in-12; the second is entitled *La Fondation et les antiquités de la basilique collégiale et curiale de Saint-Paul...*, in-12, undated and without a city name, but printed in Lyon at the author’s expense, circa 1682… ’ (Michaud).
