Description
QUINTE-CURCE. *Historiarum libri*, published with the utmost care. Leiden, [Bonaventure and Abraham] Elzevier, 1633. Small 12mo, Lavallière morocco, triple gilt fillet, crowned monogram at the corners, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with the same monogram, interior lace, linings and endpapers in Augsburg paper, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First Elzevirian edition, published under the supervision of Daniel Heinsius, of the *History of Alexander the Great* composed in the 1st century AD by Quintus Curtius. ‘A fine edition, which combines typographical beauty with the merit of great accuracy’ (Willems). It is adorned with a frontispiece title page and a fold-out map, both engraved on copper, and two woodcuts within the text depicting a coin bearing the effigy of Alexander and the oracle of Jupiter Ammon. A copy from the first and finest print run, comprising 364 pp., the edition having been reprinted three times under the same date. The Elzeviers of Leiden and later Amsterdam published four reprints of this Quinte-Curce between 1653 and 1670. A very fine copy bound in morocco leather bearing the coat of arms and cipher attributed to Father Alard Le Roy (1588–1653), a Jesuit priest, preacher and ascetic writer born in Lille and who died in Liège.
