RUBYS (Claude de). A True History of the City of Lyon. Lyon, Bonaventure Nugo, 1604. Folio, green morocco, fillet binding on the covers, decorated spine, gilt fillets on the edges, interior lace, gilt edges (Duru, 1851). First edition. This chronicle, written as a follow-up to those by Symphorien Champier and Guillaume Paradin, describes the minutest details of the customs and events in the history of Lyon. It contains a ‘Short Treatise on the Ancient Nobility of the Illustrious House of the Medici of Florence’. Claude de Rubys (1533–1613), who served as Attorney General of Lyon in 1565 and subsequently as a city councillor, dedicated the four parts of this work respectively to Chancellor Pomponne de Bellièvre, to Philibert de La Guiche, Governor of the Lyonnais, to Alphonse d’Elbène, Archbishop of Albi, and the last to the prominent burghers, merchants and other inhabitants of Lyon. This copy is enriched with two valuable original documents: an autograph letter signed by the author and a letter signed by Catherine de’ Medici. From the libraries of Pierre Adamoli (1707–1769), with bookplate, and Joseph Renard (1822–1882), with bookplate – two famous Lyon collections.
