Description
SENAULT (Louis). *Heures nouvelles dédiées à Madame la Dauphine*. Paris: the author, n.d. [c. 1680]. In-8, red morocco, gilt fillet, plain decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges. First edition of this beautiful, fully engraved book of hours, designed and executed with a burin by the famous calligrapher Louis Senault. Each page is decorated with engraved ornaments, garlands of flowers, feather strokes, ornate letters with decorative motifs, etc. It was so successful that it was continually reprinted. A first-printing copy in contemporary red morocco, featuring the ‘immodest naiads’ ’ on p. 210 – their nudity, deemed inappropriate in a devotional book, was censored in subsequent printings – and the pagination errors on pp. 47 and 223. Hinges and corners skilfully restored. Slight foxing and a few scattered stains. Two later coloured vignettes pasted onto the white endpapers.
