Description
STELLA (Jacques). Les Jeux et Plaisris [sic] de l'Enfance, invented by Jacques Stella and engraved by Claudine Bouzounet Stella. Paris, at the Galleries du Louvre, published by Stella, 1657. Small oblong quarto, blue half-maroquin, spine decorated with gilt fleurons (late 19th-century binding). First edition of this very rare series devoted to children’s games, engraved with a burin by Claudine Bouzonnet-Stella (1636–1697) after drawings by her uncle, the Lyon-based painter and engraver Jacques Stella (1596–1657). It comprises a lovely frontispiece title page, a plate bearing the coat of arms of the de Thou family, 2 typographic folios (dedication and privilege) and 50 beautiful full-width plates, all accompanied by a six-line verse engraved at the foot of each plate. Each of these plates is devoted to a game or pastime: the swing, soap bubbles, the ‘dada’, blind man’s buff, the spinning top, skittles, the jeu de paume, the hoop and the cup-and-ball game, fencing, etc. Mariette attributes the engraving of five of these plates to François de Poilly and Jean Couvray. Minor marginal soiling on a few plates; plate no. 49 has a re-edged margin; the privilege page is stained; some plates are slightly creased. IFF XVIIe, II, 87, nos. 48–99 – Brunet, V, 529 – Guilmard, II, 59, no. 54 – Gumuchian, no. 3413 (excluding the plate bearing the coat of arms).
