STRADA (Famiano). On the War in Flanders, Book Two. Rome, the heirs of Francesco Corbelletti, 1648 [1649 in the colophon]. In-4, red morocco, border of gilded foliage and double frame of gilded double lines, inner spandrels decorated with a special stamp featuring a heraldic lion, central medallion formed of four gilded fleurons, spine decorated with the same heraldic lion repeated, gilt and chiselled edges (contemporary Italian binding). First edition of the Italian translation, by Paolo Segneri, of this seminal work by the Roman Jesuit Famiano Strada (1572–1649) on the history of the conflicts that brought an end to Spanish rule over the Netherlands. This second decade, presented on its own, is dedicated to Ranuce II Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza. The work was originally published in Latin under the title *De bello belgico* (Rome, 1632–1647, 2 vols.). Written at the request – and in praise – of the Farnese family, it was fiercely attacked by Bentivoglio, Sciopp and Schonhove, but was widely circulated and translated into many languages. The first decade, covering the period from Charles V’s departure from Flanders in 1555 to the death of Don Juan of Austria in 1578, was translated into Italian by Carlo Papini and published in Rome in 1638. The second decade covers events from 1578 until the surrender of Rheinberg in 1590. As for the third decade, it was never printed, its publication having been prevented by the Spanish court. A SUPERB COPY BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCAN LEATHER BEARING THE COAT OF ARMS OF CARLO PIO DI SAVOIA (1622–1689), a cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and General Treasurer to the Holy Father, created a cardinal by Innocent X in 1654, Bishop of Ferrara from 1655 to 1663, Chamberlain of the Sacred College in 1671 and Cardinal-Bishop of the Suburbicarian Diocese of Sabina in 1683. We presented a copy of *L’Historia delle guerre civili d’Inghilterra* by G. F. Biondi (Bologna, 1647) in a similar binding adorned with the same heraldic ironwork in our sale of 4 October 2013, lot 225. Fairly pronounced foxing, corner repair to the frontispiece and title page, split joints. Sommervogel, VII, 1605.
